As of January 1, 2022, new federal rules under the No Surprises Act offer important protections for consumers receiving emergency care, non-emergency care from out-of-network providers at in-network facilities, and air ambulance services from out-of-network providers.

These rules help restrict excessive out-of-pocket costs and ensure emergency services are covered without prior authorization, regardless of whether the provider or facility is in-network.

What Does This Mean for You?

Before these protections, even if you had health insurance, getting care from an out-of-network provider often meant higher costs. This was especially common in emergencies when you couldn’t choose your provider. Even at an in-network hospital, some providers might be out-of-network and could bill you separately.

This practice is called balance billing—where the provider bills you the difference between what your insurance pays and what they charge. When unexpected, these bills are called surprise bills.

Federal Legislation Protecting You

The Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021, enacted December 27, 2020, includes:

  • The No Surprises Act (Title I), protecting consumers from surprise medical bills
  • Provisions on transparency (Title II) to help you understand costs upfront

At Positive Reset Mental Health Clinic in Manalapan, New Jersey, we support your mental health journey with clear communication and billing transparency every step of the way.

At Positive Reset Mental Health Clinic in Manalapan, New Jersey, we want to help you feel informed and in control of your care. That includes being transparent about costs.

Under the No Surprises Act, you have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the expected cost of any non-emergency medical or mental health services if you:

  • Do not have insurance
  • Are not using insurance (self-pay)

What Is a Good Faith Estimate?

A Good Faith Estimate outlines the expected charges for your scheduled services. It’s designed to help you avoid unexpected costs and better understand your financial responsibilities before receiving care.

We provide this estimate in writing at least one business day before your scheduled appointment.

When You’ll Receive an Estimate

If you are a self-pay patient, we will send your Good Faith Estimate through your secure patient portal at least 1 business day before your session. You can also:

  • Call us to request your self-pay rates
  • Email us before scheduling to review expected costs

What If Your Bill Is Higher Than Expected?

If you receive a bill that is $400 or more than your Good Faith Estimate for the same date of service, you have the right to dispute the charges.

To resolve a billing issue:

  1. Email us a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate
  2. Include the bill you received
  3. Our team will review the discrepancy and respond promptly

Tip: Save a copy or photo of your Good Faith Estimate for your records.
